The inaugural Riga Marathon began on July 27, 1991, near the Freedom Monument, immediately after the dramatic days of the barricades. In its more than thirty years of existence, the event has seen both the chaos of the 1990s, the the decline in the interest of sponsors and participants at the beginning of the 2000s, and the revival in 2007, the fastest growth in Northern Europe, culminating in the World Athletics Gold Label, the times of global pandemics created constraints and virtual running.

The road to success was long and filled with obstacles and peculiarities, as one would expect from a genuine marathon.

Riga, the vibrant capital of Latvia, is a cultural gem in Northern Europe and the biggest Baltic capital. The city, rich in history and brimming with unique cultural experiences, is easily accessible with direct flights from most major European cities.

In the scenic World Championships courses that make Riga unique on the global running map, you, along with thousands of international marathon tourists and Latvian runners, will have the opportunity to run through the breathtaking city in the spring.

We’re proud of the fact that Rimi Riga Marathon’s courses are based on the courses of the inaugural World Ahletics Road Running Championships in Riga in 2023. Get ready to enjoy the courses run in Riga by Olympic, World and European champions! And please note that our Road mile course, for example, boasts two world records!
